How Your Bald Head Increases Your Health Risk

Going bald doesn’t just affect your appearance. It also increases your health risk and puts you at more risk of developing heart disease.

Going bald is a serious problem for a lot of people, particularly men. It can make you feel self-conscious and affect your self-esteem. But did you know that it can also indicate an increased health risk? By learning more about health risks like baldness, you can more accurately assess and monitor your health. And this will allow you to make changes that will effectively improve your health and lower your risk of specific diseases. This is particularly important when it comes to heart disease, which affects so many people. So, with that in mind, here’s what you need to know about baldness.

Common Heart Disease Risk FactorsHealth Risk Secrets of Losing Your Hair

There are several commonly known health risk factors for heart disease. These include smoking, obesity, alcohol consumption, age, genetics, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol levels. With lifestyle changes, you can control some, but not all of these risk factors. However, heart disease is such a big problem in the modern world that this isn’t enough. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the US, so research is ongoing to identify further risk factors. This will help people get better control over their health and hopefully reduce this high death rate.

The Link Between Your Hair and Heart Disease

Your hair can be a good indication of your health risk. Previous studies have shown that gray hair may indicate a higher than normal risk of heart disease. In fact, premature graying can increase your risk by 5.3 times. And now, baldness may also be a good indication that there’s a problem.

A recent study separated 790 men who were younger than 40 into groups according to their level of baldness. The participants in the groups ranged from no baldness to severe baldness. They were matched with 1,270 healthy participants who acted as a control group. The participants were assessed using tests that evaluated the health of their hearts. This included blood tests, echocardiograms, electrocardiograms and coronary angiograms. The researchers also examined the participants for angiographic lesions, which are markers of coronary heart disease.

A Five-Fold Increase of Heart Disease

The results of the study were frightening. About half of the men with coronary artery disease had male pattern baldness. In the healthy group, only 27 percent had baldness. This means that male baldness increased the risk of coronary artery disease by 5.6 times. In comparison, obesity increases the risk by around 4 times. So basically the study showed that baldness may be more powerful a risk of heart disease than excess weight.

Part of what’s so worrying about this result is the fact that it can’t be changed. If you’re obese, you need to lose weight to decrease your heart risk. But you can’t force your head to grow hair to the same end. And hair plugs don’t change the original problem. However, one good result from this study is the fact that baldness is an easy marker to see and monitor. And this has implications for self-monitoring and at-home health care.

The Takeaway

The reason for the link between baldness and health risk is unclear. However, what is clear is the fact that this is an easy marker to use to assess your health at home. Firstly, it can be used to monitor your health. So, if you notice any encroaching baldness, it might be time to get your heart health assessed. It may also be useful for prognostics, particularly as time goes on and technology continues to advance.

This study isn’t useful for the healthcare system as it is. But as technology continues to advance, it could be helpful for at-home diagnoses. Using AI algorithms like those used for facial recognition, images of your hair could one day help your doctor make a more accurate calculation of your heart health risk. This is an incredibly good thing because heart disease is such a big problem for so many people. And easier and faster diagnoses are the key to a better outcome for everyone.
